In 1956, Tim took another step in his journey of self development by joining the most physically demanding, professional, and elite armed service – the Marine Corps. Its hard earned traditions of personal honor, courage, toughness, and combat readiness appealed to his warrior instincts and a growing need for self pride and esteem.
Upon graduation from Wesleyan, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and served three years of active duty as Platoon Commander, Fire Direction Officer, Executive Officer, and Acting Battery Commander. Although stationed primarily at Quantico, VA and Twentynine Palms, CA, he also trained at numerous other locations including many weeks aboard ship. He excelled in this rigorous environment attaining the rank of Captain, and was encouraged to seriously consider a military career.
The experience had an enormous impact on him and proved to be of great value throughout his life. In particular, it reinforced his appreciation of a strong organizational culture and esprit de corps as well as the benefits of physical fitness and mental toughness. Further, it taught him leadership skills, public speaking, sharp appearance, and the value of discipline; and at a young age, provided him with in depth practical experience with managing an organization that involved several hundred men, substantial amounts of equipment, and complex logistical challenges.
