Lulu Belle, born on April 5, 2004, may have been the smallest of her litter, but she was certainly the feistiest – a trait she continued to carry with her! Approximately 8 weeks later, weighing in at 1.5 pounds, she became a part of the Day family. Tim loves to remind Sandy how she promised their lives wouldn’t change when they added a dog to their pack. But all those years ago, there was a shift in their universe and their lives were never the same.
It is the love and commitment to this little 12-pound dog that led Tim and Sandy to the rescue community. They were introduced to AZ Pug Rescue through a volunteer who just happened to be one of Tim’s book editors while he was writing his autobiography, One Day’s Journey. The Days were shocked to see how many pugs were in need of a home, and that realization led them to seek out and develop strong bonds with other rescue organizations in Arizona and Wyoming. In 2012 Lulu’s Fund was formed and now provides support to over 30 rescue organizations throughout the country… a number that continues to grow.
Lulu took her first plane ride at eight weeks old. She traveled the country and dipped her paws in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. She called Arizona, California, and Wyoming home and the first thing she would do when she arrived at each home was to make sure all her toys were in their place. There’s no question who was “top dog” in the Day household, and Tim and Sandy wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Lulu went to the Rainbow Bridge on June 28, 2019. Tim and Sandy are deeply grateful for the 15 years of great joy, happiness and abundant love they shared with this little pug, who will forever be known as “their puppy”.
Lulu was a much beloved member of the Day family, and through Lulu’s Fund we hope to provide assistance to many dogs in need – and help them find their very own loving families.
