BGen Joseph R. Clearfield

Our thirty-third recipient, Brigadier General Joseph R. Clearfield, completed the AMP at Harvard Business School in June 2021.  “J.R.” currently serves as the Senior Military Advisor to the Deputy Secretary of Defense after serving as the Deputy Commander of Marine Forces Pacific.  His prior assignments were as the Commander for Marine Forces Pacific in Hawaii, Chief of Staff at U.S. Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command at Fort George C. Meade, MA, and the Commanding Officer of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit in San Diego, CA.  He has served in various billets in the Fleet Marine Force as an Infantry Officer as both a Commander and a Staff Officer.  He also served as a Military Aide in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy for the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Asia & Pacific Security Affairs.  J.R. has served in combat, contingency, and expeditionary operations at sea, from the sea and ashore in Southwest Asia, the South Red Sea, Arabian Peninsula, Northeast Africa, West Africa, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Western Pacific.  He attended Union College for his BA and earned a MS in Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (Distinguished Graduate) and a MS from Duquesne University.

J.R. and his wife, Erika, have six children.
