LtGen James F. Glynn

Our tenth recipient, Lieutenant General James F. Glynn, completed the AMP at Harvard Business School in October 2014.  Jim currently serves as the Deputy Commandant for Manpower & Reserve Affairs at HQMC, Quantico, VA.  He had previously served as the Commander, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) at Camp Lejeune, NC, since June 2020.  Prior to that, Jim served as Commanding General of Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, and the Eastern Recruiting Region.  As the Deputy Commanding General of the Special Operations Joint Task Force for Operations Inherent Resolve (SOJTF-OIR), Jim deployed to Baghdad, Iraq for a year.  His Pentagon assignments were Director of the Office of U.S. Marine Corps Communication and Military Assistant to the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps.  As a Colonel, Jim commanded MARSOC’s Special Operations School at Camp Lejeune, NC, where he was responsible for the assessment, selection, initial and advanced training of Marines in special operations.  His career began as a Rifle Platoon Commander throughout Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm, and he went on to serve in a variety of command and staff billets at Marine Barracks 8th & I, Washington, D.C.; 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, Camp Pendleton, CA; Marine Corps Recruiting Station, San Antonio, TX; and I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, CA.  Throughout these assignments, Jim deployed with four Marine Expeditionary Units (Special Operations Capable), and while assigned to the G-3, Future Operations, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force he served in Fallujah, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He subsequently returned to Iraq in 2006-2007, as the Commander of Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable).  He is a joint qualified officer following a three-year assignment with Special Operations Command – Africa, Stuttgart, Germany, where he was the Director of Operations and Director of Strategy and Plans.  Jim is a native of Albany, NY, and his service as a Marine began in May 1989, after graduating from the United States Naval Academy with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.  His education includes MS in National Security Affairs from the U.S. Army War College and a MS in Military Studies from the Marine Corps Command and Staff College.
